what's winning?
Mar 16
The basketball season is over, and as a coach, I see the mistakes, growth, and hope for the future. One of the things I noticed was that we as a team never lost an individual game...all our loses came in tournaments, where distractions are endless. so whats winning? Can you never get a gold and be a winner? Is winning important? Somebody save my mind from this endlessly debated question! or just agree with what i'm about to write. I had a teacher that preached "Sucess breeds sucess." Winning to me is a necessaty, because if you can't win, you can't be motivated to continue. Sure, they're are those out there who will continue, but people are drawn to a program that has sucess. That is a given, so my question than is what do we as teachers, and role-models go with this, and how can we use this? We lost in tournaments...tournaments are multiple games in one day, with unpredictable spaces between games, often playing teams you've never seen before. In order to win, you have to have an ability to focus on a goal. Education, job opportunities, family sucess, lust for life, all require winning...they also all require focus. I don't want my team to win every game. I want them to fall down, get up, and focus on overcoming the obstacle. You can't win, if you can't see your goal through the hornets nest of stumbling blocks whose sole goal is to take your eyes off the prize, and keep them on the miniscule, and short term issues in your life. This focus cannot come, if you don't have an eye for winning. You cannot as a coach/teacher teach focus, if you don't teach winning. What's winning? Winning is preparation for focus. What's focus? focus is an attitude that ensures sucess for life. Every boy on my team learned how to focus. Forget medals...forget games...forget the uniform. If you can learn focus...you can have victory in life. winning is focus...focus is growth...growth is sucess in life.
