Month of Mary
12 May
May is usually recognized as the Month of Mary, and during this month we celebrate with a liturgy devoted to Jesus’ holy mother, called a Marian Celebration. We worship only Jesus Christ, but we honor Mary as a saint. We honor God by remembering the role of Mary in the beginning of our salvation.
May is seen as the beginning of new life and the start of summer, which makes this a logical time for the celebrations of Mary, who brought life into the world. The Blessed Virgin Mary is the Mother of the Church and therefore the example, as well as the guide and inspiration, of everyone who, in and through the Church, seeks to be the servant of God
There are many ways to celebrate this particular devotion. Most churches have a daily recitation of the rosary. Some include the crowning of Our Lady's statue. The important thing is that Mary be honored in a special way. At one time, the domestic celebrations of the month of May were widespread, especially by setting up a small May altar in the home.
Parents, in particular, should encourage Marian devotion in their children, since their encounters with non-Catholic Christianity today often downplay (if not denigrate) the role that the Blessed Virgin played in our salvation through her fiat--her joyous "Yes" to the will of God.
The Hail Mary Prayer:
Hail Mary,
Full of Grace,
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit
of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
pray for us sinners now,
and at the hour of death. Amen
